The Center for Disease Control estimates that in the United States, 1 in 6 children, aged 3 to 17 years old, are diagnosed with one or more developmental disability. These disabilities often require a variety of therapies, such as Physical Therapy, to address a wide range of limitations and restrictions. Many families seek adjunct interventions to complement typical treatment approaches, although there is a lack of research surrounding many of these alternative interventions. Yoga is a complementary intervention, which is becoming increasingly more accepted and researched. Yoga has proposed benefits in adult and pediatric populations on mental, emotional, physical, and behavioral health, however, limited research has been conducted in pediatric populations with developmental disabilities. This poster is a review of the current literature in preparation for future research examining the effects of yoga training on gross motor skills and strength in a pediatric population with developmental disabilities.
