African lions are large cats found in southern Africa. They are unique because they are the only cat species that lives within groups, known as prides, which on average contain three males, several females, and the young. At the Buffalo Zoo, the male and female lions are separated unless they are being bred. This study will investigate the behavioral differences exhibited by the male lions and female lioness at the Buffalo Zoo. The findings of the study will be compared with studies examining male and female lions in captivity that have social contact, rather than just breeding contact.
